INSTITUTE FOR PREVENTION The Institute for Prevention is pleased to offer FREE nicotine patches for the first two weeks to Ocean and Monmouth County residents who sign up with our 6 week quit program at $15 per week. The Institute for Prevention Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Network operates a tobacco Quit Center offering individual and group tobacco cessation counseling. Quit Center group meetings are held weekly with a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Ocean County (CAT) Community Partnership Minutes Regular Meeting:
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Ocean County (CAT) Community Partnership
for a Tobacco-Free New Jersey was held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Family
Resource Center Ocean Club, Manahawkin, NJ. Albert Petroni called the meeting to
order at 9:10 am.
Members Present: Correspondence: No correspondence was received. Minutes: A motion to approve the minutes of the regularly scheduled meeting on February 9, 2010 was made, seconded, and carried. Tobacco Presentation: Carol Schoenberger, Southern Ocean County Hospital gave a presentation on tobacco and its relationship to breast cancer. Other items presented were the risk factors involved, the initiation and frequency of a mammography, and the incidences of breast cancer and age. A pre/post test was administered as part of the presentation. Report of the Chair: Albert Petroni distributed copies of a New Jersey’s Quitline report data for January. The Quitline data was compiled by Free & Clear, a new contractor for the Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program (CTCP). The purpose of the report was to create a snapshot of the number of registered Quitline callers per county. Ocean County is among the top 5 users of this service. Ad Hoc Committee Reports: 1). Zsanelle Hakspiel distributed a copy of the REBEL (Reaching Everyone by Exposing Lies) Youth Corps activity report for February 2010. REBEL Youth Corps Chapters continue to work on district comprehensive school tobacco policies. An educational program entitled "Crossing Bridges Together" is being planned for April 13, 2010. 2). Deb Levinson distributed information on a Surviving Breast Cancer Program: Body Mind, & Spirit. The program is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, 2010 at the Quality Inn (Toms River). A "Choose Your Cover" skin cancer screening event scheduled for July 17, 2010. A palliative work group is currently being formed within the coalition. The next county cancer meeting is scheduled for May 3, 2010 at 3 pm (Toms River). For more information on cancer related issues and reports visit: www.njcancer.gov. 3). Helene Long distributed and informational paper from the Institute for Prevention Saint Barnabas Behavioral Health Tobacco Dependence Treatment Program Ocean/Monmouth outlining the many programs, services, and statistical data regarding the Quitcenter and community programs. Albert Petroni updated members on the progress of the "Choose to Be Tobacco Free" Education and Community Mobilization project. Presently 9-schools have replied for a total of 1291 students. The program agenda was introduced for review and approval. Staff responsibilities were discussed and assigned. A review of the activity timelines indicates that the Community Partnership is on schedule with the April event. Old Business: Jon Gaspich indicated that he is still working on the "Smoke-Free Cars" brochure and a committee meeting is scheduled to finalize the brochure details. New Business: 1). A request for funding was submitted by the Southern Ocean County Coalition against Substance Abuse (SOCCASA) for a "Healthy Families" Fun Walk taking place at various venues on May 10, 2010. A motion was made and seconded to approve the request. After a discussion the motion was unanimously passed. Members of SOCCASA abstain ed from the vote. 2). The Community Partners had an opportunity to select a "Choose to be Tobacco-Free" T-Shirt design from the many REBEL chapter entries. The winner was a student from New Egypt High School, New Egypt, NJ. The student will be recognized during the "Choose to be Tobacco-Free" program on April 14, 2010. Community Partnership (CP) Member Comments/Concerns: Carol Schoenberger distributed a flyer for the SOCH’s Annual Men’s Health Night on Wednesday, March 24 (Manahawkin). On April 13 a Take Control: Living Well with Chronic Conditions program with be conducted at the Family Resource Center at the Ocean Club (Stafford). Carol Dorn mentioned that the Family Resource Network will host a Walk for a Brighter Tomorrow Shore Area Walk (Seaside Park) on Sunday, May 16. For more information contact Samantha at 609-392-4900. A special meeting is scheduled for April 13, 2010, at the Poland Springs Arena (Ritacco Center), Toms River, N.J. The meeting will begin at 8:30 am and is intended to be a final coordination meeting prior to the "Choose to be Tobacco-Free" program. Go to the first traffic light (Shopping Center on corner) and make a right onto Shorrock Boulevard.Follow Shorrock Blvd. until the end where you will come to a bend that turns into Beaverson Boulevard. You’ll pass Lions Head North and South. The next entrance is Lions Head Office Park. The office is the second building on the right towards the back (Next to a dentist‘s office). Family Resource Network is located in Building 11. From Parkway South: Take the Garden State Parkway North to Exit 82 ( Seaside Heights and Route 37 East). Past the traffic light, take the jug handle that crosses over Route 37 to Main Street (Route 166).At the first traffic light bear right onto Old Freehold Road. Old Freehold Road will eventually turn into New Hampshire Avenue. Follow New Hampshire Avenue to Route 70. Make a right turn onto Route 70 East until you reach the Shopping Center at Shorrock Boulevard. Make a right onto Shorrock Boulevard. Follow Shorrock Blvd. until the end where you will come to a bend that turns into Beaverson Boulevard. You’ll pass Lions Head North and South. The next entrance is Lions Head Office Park.
